Craig Cumming, the former New Zealand batter, has been appointed head coach of the Blaze for their inaugural season in the Tier 1 women’s domestic structure, affiliated with Nottinghamshire. Cumming brings a successful coaching career, having led Otago Sparks to two Hallyburton Johnstone 50-over titles in four years. He will join the Blaze in the UK after the conclusion of the Super Smash T20 competition.

Cumming expressed his excitement, saying, “I feel very humbled and privileged to be selected as head coach of the Blaze.” “I’m familiar with some of the players and staff, having visited the team during my time in the UK. Additionally, I’m eager to join such a brilliant group of people. Moreover, I’m ambitious to build on the team’s success and contribute to their continued growth.”
Cumming’s appointment follows Chris Guest’s departure, who led the Blaze to their first Charlotte Edwards Cup victory. Blaze director of cricket, James Cutt, praised Cumming’s coaching success with Otago. Cutt highlighted that Cumming made a significant impact on New Zealand women’s cricket. He also emphasized Cumming’s strong credentials among the list of applicants. “Craig’s credentials and pedigree were the most compelling among a strong list of applicants,” Cutt added.
The Blaze, with a squad combining young talent and international experience, will face an expanded fixture list this season. Cumming’s leadership will play a key role in the team’s evolution and continued success, with his fresh perspective expected to be a huge asset moving forward.
