Jamaica Scorpions captain John Campbell has received a four-match suspension for failing to show up for the toss in the 2024-25 Super50 final against Barbados Pride. The incident caused the match to be forfeited, leaving this year’s tournament without a winner.

In a statement issued by Cricket West Indies (CWI), Campbell expressed regret over his actions. “I deeply regret causing any disruption during the final and acknowledge that my actions might seem like resisting the match officials’ decision,” he said. Campbell emphasized that it was never his intention to undermine the officials’ authority or bring disrepute to the game.
The controversy unfolded when neither Campbell nor Barbados captain Raymon Reifer appeared for the toss in a rain-affected match, despite umpires deeming conditions suitable for a 20-overs-a-side contest. As a result, the final did not award a trophy, prize money, or match fees.
CWI’s director of cricket, Miles Bascombe, explained the decision to impose the minimum sanction of a four-match ban for Campbell’s Level 3 offense. “We appreciate Mr. Campbell’s acknowledgment and apology. This decision underscores the importance of captains in maintaining sportsmanship and respect for the game’s integrity,” Bascombe said. He expressed hope that Campbell would use this experience to positively contribute to West Indies cricket in the future.
Meanwhile, Reifer’s case remains unresolved as he has yet to respond to the charges brought by match referee Reon King.
This incident highlights the critical role of captains in upholding the values of cricket and ensuring adherence to match protocols, especially in high-stakes contests like the Super50 final.
