The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is reportedly contemplating nominating Mohammed Shami, a prominent Indian cricketer, as a candidate from West Bengal in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The BJP has approached Shami, who represents Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and remains active in the state’s domestic cricket, to consider contesting in the elections. However, as of now, Shami has not confirmed his decision regarding this proposition.

Sources suggest that the BJP views Shami as a potential candidate who could bolster their chances in the forthcoming general elections in West Bengal. Internal discussions within the party hint at the belief that Shami’s candidacy might resonate well, particularly in minority-dominated constituencies in Bengal. If Shami agrees, he could potentially contest from the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency, which has gained attention due to recent unrest in the Sandeshkhali village.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami, currently sidelined from international matches, is recuperating from a recent surgery. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that Shami will begin his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru following a successful heel surgery. Shami has been out of action since India’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign, during which he emerged as the leading wicket-taker, garnering praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his exceptional performance throughout the tournament.
