BCCI Removes Impact Player Rule from Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Tournament

The BCCI has decided to scrap the Impact Player rule for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy (SMAT). This rule, introduced in SMAT a couple of years ago and later extended to the Indian Premier League (IPL), allowed teams to substitute a player during a match to influence its outcome.

On Monday, the BCCI informed state associations of the decision, stating, “The BCCI has decided to do away with the provision of the ‘Impact Player’ for the ongoing season.” Despite this change, the rule will remain in place for the IPL for the next three seasons, up to 2027.

The Impact Player rule has been a subject of debate since its introduction in the 2023 IPL season. While some believe it adds excitement to the game, others, including prominent players like Rohit Sharma, argue that it could hinder the development of allrounders. Rohit expressed his concerns on the Club Prairie podcast, stating, “It will hold back the development of allrounders because cricket is played by 11 players, not 12. I’m not a fan of the rule, as it takes away from the essence of the game just for added entertainment.”

BCCI secretary Jay Shah had previously referred to the rule as “a test case” in the IPL, indicating that it wasn’t permanent, though it would continue for now. Saurashtra head coach Niraj Odedra welcomed the decision to scrap it for domestic cricket, noting that the ICC doesn’t implement the rule in major tournaments. “It will be beneficial for cricketers aspiring to play for India, as they progress from domestic cricket,” Odedra added.
