The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Devajit Saikia as the acting secretary of the board, following the elevation of Jay Shah to the position of ICC Chairman, which took effect on December 1. Saikia, a former first-class cricketer from Assam, is currently serving as the BCCI’s joint secretary.
BCCI President Roger Binny appointed Devajit Saikia as the acting secretary, exercising his constitutional powers to fill the role temporarily. According to the BCCI’s regulations, Saikia will hold the position until the board selects a permanent replacement. In a letter to Saikia, Binny referenced clause 7(1)(d) of the BCCI constitution, which allows the president to delegate the secretary’s functions in the event of a vacancy or absence.
Binny’s letter stated, “The president shall, in the event of a vacancy or indisposition, delegate the functions to another office-bearer until the vacancy is filled or the indisposition ends.” Binny expressed confidence in Saikia’s ability to handle the responsibilities, adding, “I am confident you will perform the duties to the best of your abilities and with aplomb.”
The appointment is a temporary arrangement, and Saikia is expected to serve as the acting secretary until September next year. The BCCI will then initiate the process to appoint a permanent secretary according to its rules and regulations. Saikia also holds the position of Advocate General of Assam, further adding to his legal expertise in his new role.
