BBL and WBBL to introduce a new player trading period

The Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) have introduced a new player trade window, allowing clubs to sign players and swap draft picks after each season. The 10-day player movement window will be available to teams once the home-and-away part of both tournaments concludes and before the next season’s contracting embargo begins.

BBL and WBBL to introduce a new player trading period

The trade period for the WBBL will run from December 2 to December 11, while for the BBL, it will be from January 28 to February 6. During this time, clubs are prohibited from extending contracts for existing players, which must be done before or after the embargo.

Clubs can use this trade window to make several moves. They can trade players with other clubs, though these deals do not need to be reciprocal. Teams can also sign players in the final year of their contracts or trade overseas draft positions as part of or separate from player trades.

Previously, clubs could not sign players during the embargo period, although they could make non-binding agreements. The new trade window offers more flexibility, as demonstrated by Melbourne Stars’ recent interest in Matt Kuhnemann, which the embargo’s timing affected.

Additionally, there are limits on squad sizes during the trade period: WBBL clubs can have eight players before the window and up to 10 afterward, while BBL squads can have 10 players initially, increasing to 12 after the window. The new system aims to enhance list management and adds strategic depth to both leagues.
