Australia coach Andrew McDonald believes the top six batters who finished the last Test season are likely to retain their spots for the highly anticipated five-match series against India later this year. However, their batting order may change, as McDonald hinted that adjustments are still under consideration.

Steve Smith, who opened the batting after David Warner’s mid-season retirement, may not stay in that position. Andrew McDonald explained that shifting Smith could lead to other changes, potentially moving Cameron Green up the order. Green impressed in the last series with a 174 not out at number four, creating options for the selectors.
“We haven’t made any firm decisions yet,” Andrew McDonald said. “We’ve already had discussions, but nothing is set in stone. We’re still focused on having the best six batters for the team.” The coach emphasized that Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and Smith would likely retain their places in the side.
Andrew McDonald also mentioned that Australia’s priority will be the series against India, starting in November. Some players may be rested from the preceding white-ball series against Pakistan to prepare for the red-ball challenges ahead.
The Test series kicks off in Perth on November 22, followed by matches in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.
