Asalanka to Lead Sri Lanka in First Two T20Is Against Bangladesh in Absence of Hasaranga

Charith Asalanka steps in as the interim captain for Sri Lanka as Wanindu Hasaranga serves a suspension for the first two T20Is against Bangladesh, commencing on March 4 in Sylhet. Furthermore, Avishka Fernando joins the squad, taking the place of the injured Pathum Nissanka.

Jeffrey Vandersay makes a return to the squad after a gap of two years, serving as cover for Hasaranga during his suspension. Hasaranga will resume his captaincy duties for the third T20I on March 9.

Fernando’s inclusion is largely based on his strong performances in ODIs, particularly against Afghanistan, where he scored 91 off 66 and 88 off 100. Despite inconsistencies in the past, Sri Lanka’s selectors aim to reintegrate him into the team.

Vandersay’s recall comes after a lengthy absence from T20Is, with his role primarily serving as a backup for Hasaranga. Akila Dananjaya and Maheesh Theekshana are the other spinners in the squad.

The series is set to take place entirely in Sylhet, with the first T20I scheduled for March 4.
