Amol Kale, who became the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) President in 2022 after defeating former India cricketer Sandeep Patil, tragically passed away just after India’s thrilling T20 World Cup 2024 victory over Pakistan at Nassau County Stadium in New York on June 9. Kale, who was present at the game, suffered a cardiac arrest amidst the celebrations.
Under Amol Kale’s leadership, MCA had announced significant reforms, including a 100% pay rise for senior Mumbai cricketers starting from the 2024-25 domestic season. He also introduced match fees for Mumbai players in red-ball cricket, a pioneering move among state cricket boards in India.
“The MCA will be providing additional match fees per Ranji Trophy game to each player from next season onwards. Red-ball cricket is paramount for us, and Ranji Trophy holds a special place for everyone in Mumbai,” Amol Kale’s had stated earlier.
In a gesture to enhance fan experience, MCA under Amol Kale’s tenure also initiated the provision of free popcorn and cold drinks for spectators at the World Cup 2023 match between India and Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Kale’s proposal was warmly received by the MCA Apex council, highlighting his innovative approach to engage and support cricket fans.
“I proposed to offer complimentary popcorn and cold drinks to all non-hospitality area fans attending World Cup games. Fans needed to show their tickets at a designated counter to receive these refreshments, a gesture fully funded by MCA,” Amol Kale’s had explained before the match.
Kale’s sudden demise is a profound loss for Mumbai cricket, marking the end of a promising tenure marked by progressive reforms and a commitment to enhancing both player welfare and spectator experience.
