The Sri Lankan cricket team has appointed former Pakistan cricketer Aaqib Javed as the fast-bowling coach until the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup in June 2024.
Aaqib Javed, a member of Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning squad, currently holds the positions of Director of Cricket Operations and head coach at Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Ashley De Silva, the CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), expressed a warm welcome to Javed, emphasizing his extensive international experience both as a player and a coach. De Silva believes that Javed’s expertise will significantly contribute to the preparation of Sri Lanka’s bowlers for upcoming major tournaments, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

With a notable coaching background, Javed has previously worked with various teams, including Pakistan at senior and junior levels, Afghanistan, and the UAE. Notably, under his guidance, the UAE team achieved ODI and T20I status and qualified for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. Additionally, Javed served as Pakistan’s bowling coach during their victorious campaign in the 2009 T20 World Cup.
During his playing career, Javed earned renown as a right-arm seamer and fulfilled a crucial role in supporting legendary Pakistani bowlers such as Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. He amassed a total of 236 international wickets across 22 Test matches and 163 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for Pakistan.
