Wisconsin basketball standout John Tonje continues to earn national recognition, adding another prestigious honor to his growing list of accolades.
On Monday, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) named the 6-foot-5 wing to the 2024-25 Oscar Robertson Trophy midseason watch list, which recognizes the most outstanding men’s college basketball player in the country. The award, established in 1959, will be presented at the NCAA Men’s Final Four in San Antonio, Texas, this April.
Tonje is among 50 athletes selected for the midseason list, joining an elite group that includes Cooper Flagg (Duke), Mark Sears (Alabama), Ryan Nembhard (Gonzaga), Caleb Love (Arizona), and Kam Jones (Marquette).

The Big Ten Conference boasts 12 players on the midseason watch list, including:
- Jaden Atkins (Michigan State)
- Ace Bailey (Rutgers)
- Ace Baldwin Jr. (Penn State)
- Nate Bittle (Oregon)
- Ja’Kobi Gillespie (Maryland)
- Dylan Harper (Rutgers)
- Kasparas Jakucionis (Illinois)

Tonje’s Impact at Wisconsin
Since joining Greg Gard’s squad, Tonje has been a force on both ends of the floor. Through 22 games, he has been the Badgers’ primary offensive weapon, averaging 18.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per contest while shooting 46.9% from the field, 41.5% from three-point range, and a Big Ten-leading 92.9% from the free-throw line.
His dominance was on full display early in the season when he scored a career-high 41 points against No. 20 Arizona in November. Tonje has tallied 20 or more points in eight games and has been on a tear recently, scoring at least 23 points in four straight outings dating back to Jan. 21. Most recently, he dropped 27 points in Wisconsin’s win over Northwestern on Saturday.
His stellar play has already earned him multiple honors, including the 2024 Greenbrier Tip-Off Tournament MVP after leading the Badgers to wins over UCF and Pittsburgh, as well as back-to-back Big Ten Player of the Week awards earlier in the season.
As Wisconsin pushes toward the postseason, Tonje remains a key player in the Badgers’ pursuit of a deep tournament run. If he continues his impressive play, he could cement himself as a serious contender for the Oscar Robertson Trophy come April.
