Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is currently away from the team for personal reasons, leaving the timeline for his return uncertain. Head coach JJ Redick confirmed the situation following Friday’s practice, stating that the team had excused James’ absence.
“LeBron is not with the team right now,” Redick said, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “He’s out for personal reasons, excused absence.”
The 39-year-old, who is in his 22nd NBA season, has been instrumental for the Lakers, averaging 23.0 points, 9.1 assists, and 8.0 rebounds per game. However, James has missed the last two games—starting with Sunday’s 107-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers—due to left foot soreness, as noted on the injury report. That same designation applied to his absence for Friday’s matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
James last took the court on December 6, delivering a standout performance with a 39-point, 11-rebound, and 10-assist triple-double in a narrow 134-132 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. Before his recent absences, he had played in all 23 of the Lakers’ games this season.
James, who will celebrate his 40th birthday on December 30, remains one of the NBA’s most enduring stars. The four-time MVP and four-time NBA champion has cemented his legacy with 20 All-NBA team selections and three Olympic gold medals. Despite entering his third professional decade, James continues to demonstrate excellence on the court.

In James’ absence, the Lakers will lean more heavily on Anthony Davis, who has been a cornerstone of their offense and defense. Additional support will come from other key contributors, including Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, Max Christie, and Austin Reaves. Reaves, sidelined for five games with a left pelvic contusion, is expected to make his return to the lineup on Friday.
Without James, the Lakers have relied on a rotation that includes D’Angelo Russell, Cam Reddish, Dalton Knecht, and Christian Koloko. As the team navigates this period, they will look to maintain momentum and find a balance in James’ absence.
The Lakers and their fans eagerly await updates on James’ status, hoping for a swift resolution as the team continues its quest for a strong playoff push.
