The EuroLeague has announced significant updates to its rulebook for the 2024-25 season. Aiming to enhance fairness and clarity in both the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and BKT EuroCup.
One of the key changes is the inclusion of backcourt violations in the Instant Replay System (IRS). From now on, if a backcourt violation is called, the referees will have the ability to review the decision in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter and overtime. Additionally, coaches will have the option to challenge this call at any point during the game.
Other updates align EuroLeague rules with FIBA regulations, including changes to jump ball violations and the defensive semi-circle (DSC) rule:
- Jump Ball Violations: Previously, a jump ball violation resulted in a throw-in. Under the new rules, such violations will no longer lead to a throw-in. Instead, if the violation occurs in the opposing team’s frontcourt, the ball will be inbounded in the backcourt with 24 seconds on the shot clock. If it happens in the backcourt, the ball will be inbounded in the frontcourt with 14-seconds on the shot clock.
- Defensive Semi-Circle (DSC): For block/charge calls, a defensive player will now be considered outside the DSC if their foot is elevated above the line, rather than being deemed inside as per previous rules.
These changes reflect the EuroLeague’s ongoing commitment to improving the game experience for players and fans alike.
