A recent basketball tournament in Russia has sparked controversy after a team erroneously adopted the colors and name of the Colombian national team, leading Colombia’s basketball federation to announce plans for legal action.
The Colombian Basketball Federation issued a statement on Thursday. Asserting that it had neither sanctioned the participation nor received a formal approach about joining the Russian Friendship Cup held in Perm. The federation condemned the unauthorized use of its image and logo and vowed to pursue legal recourse.
“The Colombian Basketball Federation did not authorize any club to represent us at the Russian Friendship Cup,” the statement clarified. “We did not receive any formal proposal or endorsement request regarding this event.”
The team, falsely representing Colombia, faced a heavy defeat, losing 155-53 to a local Perm team and 108-57 to Venezuela. The authorities subsequently canceled their scheduled match against Russia.
Andrei Kirilenko, president of the Russian Basketball Federation and a former NBA player, defended the tournament’s integrity. Asserting that he conducted all interactions with the Colombian team through official channels.
Kirilenko told Match TV that they carried out all interactions with the team claiming to represent Colombia through verified and official communication channels. “We stand by our position that all communication and coordination were handled through proper sources.”
Following the team’s underwhelming performance, Kirilenko announced that they would revise the tournament schedule to ensure a more balanced and competitive environment. “After the first game, it became clear that the team’s performance did not meet expectations, leading to some disappointment. Consequently, we have adjusted the tournament schedule to enhance competitiveness,” he said.
