India’s U-18 basketball team put up a spirited performance against Iran, the continent’s second-ranked team, in the classification game for 5th-8th place at the Asia Cup. Despite a commendable display of resilience and determination. The Indian cagers were ultimately defeated 59-73 at the Prince Hamza Hall in Jordan on Sunday.
After a challenging quarterfinal loss to China, India rebounded with a more aggressive and cohesive style of play against Iran. The game started on a promising note, with India taking a narrow one-point lead at the end of the-first quarter. Thanks to their attacking strategy that kept the Iranian defense on its toes.
The second quarter saw India continue their offensive momentum. However, a few critical mistakes in the final 30 seconds before halftime allowed Iran to capitalize and secure a six-point swing, giving them a crucial lead going into the break.
Despite India’s best efforts to regain control after halftime, Iran managed to maintain their advantage. The final quarter saw Iran solidify their lead, ultimately securing a comfortable 14-point victory. The quarter-wise scores in favor of Iran read 20-21, 18-11, 19-16, 16-11. Notably, the lead changed hands eight times during the game, with India holding the upper hand for 13 minutes.
Iran’s dominance was evident in the rebounding battle, where they out-rebounded India 50-30, and in their ability to capitalize on turnovers, scoring 41 points off India’s mistakes. Iran also excelled in ball control, recording 17 steals to India’s 7.
India’s head coach Scott Flemming acknowledged the team’s strengths and weaknesses after the game. “We played with energy and executed very good half-court defense. Our strategy to double their best big man was effective as he didn’t score. However, our shortcomings were in turnovers and rebounding. The games that we won, we did a much better job in these areas. No losses are acceptable, but I am still proud of our successes in this tournament,” he said.
For Iran, Arian Edalatfar was the standout performer, contributing 17 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 7 steals with an efficiency of 25. India’s point guard Mirthun Vel Dhanasekar led his team with 18 points, while captain Lavish added 15 points to the tally.
India’s journey in the U-18 Asia Cup will continue on Monday when they face Korea in the 7th-8th place classification game. Despite the loss, the team’s improved performance against a top-tier opponent provides a solid foundation for the future.
