BELGRADE (Serbia) — Since joining the Denver Nuggets in 2015, Nikola Jokić has earned considerable admiration from Serbia’s basketball community. His impressive achievements, including the 2023 NBA title and three MVP awards, have solidified his reputation as one of the world’s best players.
However, Jokić’s recent performances for the Serbian national team at the Paris Olympics have elevated his status to unprecedented heights among his compatriots. According to Serbia’s Nuggets assistant coach, Ognjen Stojaković, Jokić’s impact on the national stage has deeply resonated with Serbian fans.
“In general, I noticed that our people were not fully aware of Nikola’s greatness as a basketball player,” Stojaković commented in an interview with meridiansport.rs. “Simply put, if you don’t achieve something with the national team, people tend to value you less, regardless of your club successes.”
Why This Perception Matters
Stojaković explained that Serbian fans have long held a deep-rooted passion for their national basketball team. Despite Jokić’s significant achievements with the Nuggets, it is his dedication to the national team that has truly endeared him to his countrymen.
“There’s a saying here,” Stojaković continued, “if you don’t win something with the national team, people don’t fully appreciate you, no matter what you achieve with your club.”
Jokić’s connection with his homeland was further strengthened by his spirited performances during the Olympics. As the team leader, he demonstrated exceptional passion, commitment, and emotional investment.
Though Jokić previously earned a silver medal with Serbia in Rio, his role in the Paris Olympics was far more central. His extraordinary play included critical moments such as the overtime victory against Australia in the Quarter-Finals, where he made pivotal contributions on both ends of the floor.
Unmatched Efficiency in Paris
Jokić’s Olympic performance was nothing short of spectacular. He finished the tournament with an astonishing efficiency rating of 31.0 per game, the highest in the competition. His nearest rival, Giannis Antetokounmpo, had a rating of 26.5 per game. Efficiency, a statistic that combines a player’s offensive and defensive contributions, underscores Jokić’s dominance throughout the tournament.

“Few people realize how much Serbia means to Nikola,” Stojaković noted. “His absence from previous championships was due to the immense effort required to lead the Nuggets. It’s challenging to carry an entire franchise on your shoulders, and Jokić is a very responsible player. He chose not to represent Serbia unprepared.”
Different Faces: Denver vs. Serbia
Stojaković also observed a distinct difference between Jokić’s performances with the Nuggets and his play for Serbia. “The emotions are different,” he explained. “When Nikola is with the national team, he approaches the game with a completely different mindset. It’s clear how much he values playing for Serbia.”
The Paris Olympics have not only showcased Jokić’s exceptional talent but also underscored his deep connection to his homeland, further enhancing his status as a beloved figure in Serbian basketball.
