Australia and Spain played an exhilarating game in front of a capacity crowd at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille, marking the tip-off of the Paris 2024 Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament.
With veterans Patty Mills and Joe Ingles having retired, Josh Giddey emerged as the new star. The 21-year-old led Australia to a 92-80 victory over Spain in Group A, showcasing his versatility with 17 points, 8 assists, and 8 rebounds. His performance evoked memories of Drazen Petrovic’s Olympic debut in 1984.
Spain’s defense, led by coach Sergio Scariolo, tried various strategies, including man-to-man and a 3-2 zone, but struggled to contain Giddey. Australia built a 14-point lead in the first half, though Spain rallied to take a brief 56-54 lead in the third quarter. With Giddey on the bench, Patty Mills and Jack McVeigh helped regain the lead, sparking a decisive 15-3 run.
Jock Landale was another standout, contributing 20 points and 9 rebounds, and Australia was +30 during his 28 minutes on the court. The Boomers’ fast-paced game proved too much for Spain, dominating in fast break points (15-5) and points in the paint (+12).
Despite a valiant effort from Santi Aldama, who scored 27 points, Spain couldn’t complete a comeback. Australia, with contributions from multiple players, maintained control, securing a comfortable win. Both teams now prepare for their next games, with Spain facing Greece and Australia set to play Canada.
“We had contributors all across the board,” said Giddey. “That’s what it’s gonna take to win a game like this and in a tournament like this.” Coach Brian Goorjian praised his team’s resilience and collective effort, highlighting their balanced and effective play.
