Axar Patel fined for Delhi Capitals’ slow over rate against Mumbai Indians

Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel has been fined INR 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate during their IPL 2025 clash against Mumbai Indians on Sunday in Delhi. This was DC’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which imposes a fine of INR 12 lakh on the captain for a first-time breach. The league has done away with match suspensions for slow over rate violations, replacing them with monetary penalties and in-game fielding restrictions.

Axar Patel fined for Delhi Capitals' slow over rate against Mumbai IndiansDespite the fine, the bigger disappointment for DC was their unexpected 12-run loss — their first defeat of the season after four straight wins. Chasing 206, DC looked well placed when Karun Nair smashed a blistering 89 off 40 balls. With 66 needed from the final eight overs and seven wickets in hand, victory seemed within reach.

However, the innings unraveled quickly. A string of poor shots from the middle order and a rare hat-trick of run-outs in the 19th over triggered a dramatic collapse, ending their unbeaten run.

After the defeat, Axar Patel admitted they let the match slip away. “We had the game in our hands,” he said. “Some soft dismissals and poor shot selection from the middle order cost us. Losing by 12 runs with an over remaining shows we still had a chance. You can’t always rely on the lower order to finish games.”

Earlier in the season, several other players, including Hardik Pandya, Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag, and Rajat Patidar, were also fined for slow over rate offences.
