Glenn Phillips Ruled Out of IPL 2025; Gujarat Titans Face Overseas Player Crunch

Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of the rest of IPL 2025 after suffering a groin injury while fielding during Gujarat Titans’ (GT) match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 6 in Hyderabad. As per an official IPL statement, Phillips has flown back to New Zealand. Gujarat Titans, who currently top the points table with four wins from five games, are yet to announce a replacement for him.

He was brought in as a substitute fielder after the fifth over of the SRH innings. However, he had to leave the field just minutes later. The injury occurred when he chased and fielded the fourth ball of the over, delivered by Prasidh Krishna, and made a sharp throw to the keeper’s end as Ishan Kishan and Nitish Kumar Reddy completed a quick single. Phillips immediately grabbed his groin and went down in visible pain. He hobbled off the field before the next delivery, assisted by GT staff.

This is Gujarat Titans’ second overseas setback in the tournament. Kagiso Rabada had earlier exited the squad on April 3 to attend to a personal matter. His return remains uncertain, and the team hasn’t named a replacement for him either.

GT had entered the season with only seven overseas players. With both Phillips and Rabada unavailable, the squad is down to five. So far, Jos Buttler, Rashid Khan, and Sherfane Rutherford have played all matches. The team also has Afghanistan’s Karim Janat and South Africa’s Gerald Coetzee in the squad. However, Coetzee is still recovering from an earlier injury that kept him out of both the SA20 and the Champions Trophy.
