Amanda Gutierres came off the bench to score a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Brazil edged past the United States 2-1 on Tuesday night at PayPal Park in San Jose. This victory marked Brazil’s first win over the U.S. women’s team since December 2014 and their first-ever win on American soil by a CONMEBOL nation.

The match was the second of two exhibition games between the sides. The U.S. had previously beaten Brazil to claim gold at the Paris Olympics last summer.
The match began with a bang as Catarina Macario scored just 34 seconds in. Alyssa Thompson made a swift run down the left wing, delivering the ball to Macario, who skilfully rounded Brazilian goalkeeper Natascha to net her 10th international goal.
Brazil responded in the 24th minute when Kerolin unleashed a powerful strike from distance that beat U.S. goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn. It was only the ninth goal conceded by the U.S. since Emma Hayes took over as head coach last May.
The decisive moment came in stoppage time, as Gutierres connected with a cross from Luany to seal the victory for Brazil. McGlynn, making just her third start for the national team, was unable to stop the late effort.
Trinity Rodman, who scored in Saturday’s 2-0 win, didn’t play this match as a precaution after a recent back injury. Meanwhile, sisters Alyssa and Gisele Thompson started together for the second time, becoming the first sibling pair to do so since Sam and Kristie Mewis in 2021.
Emma Hayes made seven changes to her lineup, fielding a squad with an average of just 17.9 caps — the least experienced U.S. starting XI in 24 years. The team will next face China on May 31 and June 3.
