Pakistan recently hosted the Champions Trophy, marking its first ICC event in 29 years. However, the tournament proved financially challenging for the PCB, resulting in a significant loss.
A major expenditure came from stadium renovations, with Pakistan investing heavily in upgrading three venues. Additionally, India’s refusal to travel led to a hybrid model, shifting five of the 15 matches to neutral venues. This reduced the number of games played in Pakistan, affecting ticket sales and sponsorship revenue.
According to The Telegraph, PCB spent PKR 18 billion (around Rs 4,823 crore) on stadium renovations, exceeding the budget by 50%. An extra $40 million (approximately Rs 3,320 crore) was allocated for event preparations. Despite these investments, revenue from hosting fees and ticket sales only reached Rs 498 crore, leading to a massive financial shortfall. In total, PCB reportedly suffered losses of Rs 7,445 crore.
Adding to the setback, Pakistan’s early exit from the tournament further impacted financial returns. The team crashed out in the group stage, playing just one game at home. Their much-anticipated clash against India took place in Dubai, while another match was washed out.
With fewer home games, broadcasting interest declined, and sponsorship deals suffered. Rain-affected matches further reduced revenue opportunities. Ultimately, Pakistan’s hosting experience fell short of expectations, both in terms of cricketing success and financial gains.
