Cricket Australia has confirmed that the one-off Test between Australia and England at the MCG in March 2027 will be a pink-ball, day-night match. This historic game will celebrate the 150th anniversary of men’s Test cricket, marking the first-ever Test match played at the venue in 1877 between the same teams. Scheduled from March 11-15, it will be the first day-night men’s Test at the MCG.

First-Ever Day-Night Men’s Test at the MCG
Unlike the first Test in 1877 and the Centenary Test in 1977, which both used a red ball during the day, the 2027 anniversary match will take place under lights. The decision follows the success of the recent women’s Ashes day-night Test at the same venue earlier in 2024.
Reasons Behind the Day-Night Format
One key reason for hosting the match under lights is to enhance crowd attendance, as it will be held during Australia’s school and work year. A day-night fixture allows more fans to attend after work or school, unlike the traditional Boxing Day Test, which takes place during the holiday season. Additionally, a pink-ball match will improve global television viewership, especially in the UK, where the third session will be broadcast in the morning, starting at 7:30 AM local time.
CA CEO Todd Greenberg on the Historic Match
New Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg expressed gratitude to the Victorian state government and the Melbourne Cricket Club for supporting this initiative. He highlighted how the match would honor cricket’s rich heritage while embracing the modern evolution of Test cricket. Greenberg also referenced the Centenary Test in 1977, which produced memorable moments like David Hookes’ five consecutive boundaries off Tony Greig, Rick McCosker’s courageous batting with a broken jaw, and Derek Randall’s gritty century. He hopes the 150th Anniversary Test will create its own iconic moments.
Australia’s Busy 2027 Schedule
The 2027 Test is part of a packed calendar for Australia. They will first play a four-Test home series against New Zealand in December 2026 and January 2027. Then, they will tour India for a five-Test series before returning home for the England clash. The match will coincide with the start of IPL 2027, scheduled to begin on March 14.
Although the one-off Test won’t be part of the World Test Championship, Australia could still qualify for the WTC final in June, followed by an away Ashes series and the ODI World Cup in October-November 2027.
