Kohli surpasses Tendulkar to become the fastest to 14,000 ODI runs

Virat Kohli became the fastest batter to reach 14,000 ODI runs, achieving the milestone in just 287 innings during India’s Champions Trophy match against Pakistan in Dubai. He entered the game needing 15 runs to reach the mark and achieved it while guiding India to victory with an unbeaten 100. He sealed his 51st ODI century by hitting the winning boundary off Khushdil Shah.

Kohli surpasses Tendulkar to become the fastest to 14,000 ODI runs

Kohli is now the third batter to cross 14,000 ODI runs, following Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara. Tendulkar took 350 innings, while Sangakkara needed 378, making Kohli’s feat significantly faster. He also reached the milestone in just 14,984 balls, far quicker than Tendulkar (16,292) and Sangakkara (17,789). Kohli’s current ODI average exceeds 57, compared to Tendulkar’s 44.19 and Sangakkara’s 41.73 at the same stage.

Since June 2017, Kohli has been the fastest to every 1000-run milestone from 8000 onwards. He now ranks third in all-time ODI runs and is set to surpass Sangakkara (14,234) soon. Tendulkar remains the highest with 18,426 runs. Kohli also holds the record for most ODI centuries, surpassing Tendulkar’s 49 during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Anil Kumble noted Kohli’s composure and ability to thrive under pressure, especially in high-stakes games like those against Pakistan. He highlighted how Kohli’s mindset and approach made his innings seamless.

Adding to his achievements, Kohli also became India’s leading fielder in ODI catches, taking his tally to 158 during the match.
