Why Liverpool’s Rio Ngumoha Is Absent from the Squad vs. PSV

Liverpool have made significant changes to their squad for their Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven, with several senior players rested. However, one notable omission is Rio Ngumoha, whose absence is due to registration rules rather than selection decisions.

With a hectic domestic schedule ahead—including a Premier League fixture against Bournemouth and a Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham—Liverpool have opted to rotate their squad. Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold are among the key players left behind, while younger talents such as Trey Nyoni, Jayden Danns, and Amara Nallo have traveled with the team.

Ngumoha Ineligible Due to Registration Rules

Despite his impressive emergence this season, 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha is unavailable for selection due to Champions League squad registration rules. The competition allows teams to name an ‘A’ squad at the beginning of the season, which includes senior players and those managers want available for European fixtures. Additionally, there is a ‘B’ list for players born after January 1, 2003, but they must have been with their club for at least two years to qualify.

Liverpool did not include Ngumoha, who joined from Chelsea in 2024, in the ‘A’ squad, as he does not meet the criteria for the ‘B’ list, ruling him out of Wednesday’s match. In contrast, West Ham and Leicester added Nallo and Nyoni to the ‘A’ squad in 2023, making them eligible to play.

Ngumoha made history earlier this month when he became Liverpool’s youngest-ever starter in their FA Cup third-round victory over Accrington Stanley. However, if he is to feature in the Champions League this season, the team will need to register him in the ‘A’ squad for the knockout stages.

Arne Slot Confident in His Squad Selection

Ahead of the PSV match, Liverpool manager Arne Slot dismissed any notion that the squad rotation was about testing players under pressure.

“They don’t need to prove themselves, we know what the quality is for the players that are going to play tomorrow,” Slot said on Tuesday. “We are playing, like all teams in Europe, many, many games, and these players are ready.”

“Those left behind could have played tomorrow, but for the long term, it was important to give them a break. If you look at our season, we have always done this when there was a League Cup or FA Cup game, providing a moment for players to get some freshness back.”

Liverpool’s Champions League Outlook

Thanks to their top-two finish in the Champions League league phase, Liverpool have already secured direct passage to the round of 16. They will face the winner of a play-off involving teams ranked 15th to 18th. PSV, currently 19th, could find themselves in one of these play-offs depending on Wednesday’s results.

With a mix of youth and experience set to feature, Liverpool will aim to maintain their unbeaten Champions League record, even with several key players watching from home.
