Neymar has taken a massive financial hit, forfeiting £52 million to orchestrate a return to his boyhood club, Santos, after parting ways with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.
The Brazilian star, who joined Al-Hilal in 2023 for a record £77 million transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, endured a challenging 18-month stint in the Saudi Pro League. Limited to just seven appearances due to a devastating ACL injury and subsequent setbacks, Neymar’s time in Saudi Arabia ended as a disappointing chapter in his otherwise illustrious career.
At 32, Neymar is seeking a career revival with Santos, the club where he first made his mark before moving to Barcelona in 2013. His homecoming, however, comes at a steep cost. By mutually agreeing to terminate his lucrative contract with Al-Hilal, Neymar walked away from £52 million in remaining wages. According to ESPN, Neymar and his father may offset some of the financial loss by joining an investment fund tied to Santos, Though the official confirmation of his return is expected in the coming days.
In a statement on Monday, Al-Hilal expressed gratitude to Neymar, saying: “The club thanks Neymar for his contributions and wishes him success in his future endeavors.” Al-Hilal won last season’s Saudi Pro League title despite Neymar’s prolonged absence.

Neymar, who still holds the record as the world’s most expensive footballer following his £200 million move from Barcelona to PSG in 2017, arrived in Saudi Arabia with ambitions to “write new sporting history.” Unfortunately, a ruptured ACL during Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023 cut his time short. A brief return to action last October ended after just two matches, as he appeared to sustain a hamstring injury in his second game.
Now back at Santos, where he scored 136 goals in 225 games before embarking on a European adventure, Neymar is eager to rediscover his form. Beyond club ambitions, he has his sights set on earning a spot in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, a tournament he has declared will be his final opportunity on the global stage.
“I will try. *I want to be there. I will do everything I can to be part of the national team,” Neymar recently told CNN. *“I know this will be my last World Cup, my last shot, my last chance, and I will do everything I can to play in it.”
For Neymar, the emotional return to Santos represents not just a chance to relive his roots but also a crucial step in reigniting his career and legacy.
