Afghanistan’s rising star, Azmatullah Omarzai, has been named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2024, following an exceptional year in the 50-over format. The 24-year-old all-rounder is the first Afghan player to receive this prestigious honor.

Omarzai showcased his skills in 14 ODIs, amassing 417 runs at an impressive average of 52.12. His tally included a century and three half-centuries. His standout performance came against Sri Lanka, where he scored an unbeaten 149*, leading Afghanistan to a memorable victory. In addition, his quick-fire 86* off 50 balls against South Africa contributed to another surprising win for his team.
With the ball, Omarzai was just as effective, taking 17 wickets at an average of 20.47. His best bowling figures were 4/18 against Zimbabwe, highlighting his ability to deliver in crucial moments. His economy rate was a remarkable 4.90, and he claimed two four-wicket hauls throughout the year.
Omarzai’s all-round brilliance played a key role in Afghanistan’s success in ODI cricket, helping them secure several significant victories. His outstanding performances in both batting and bowling have earned him recognition on the global stage, making this achievement a historic one for Afghanistan cricket.
