Chelsea have exercised their recall clause to bring Trevoh Chalobah back from his loan spell at Crystal Palace. The 25-year-old defender returns to Stamford Bridge to bolster the squad after injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile left manager Enzo Maresca short of defensive options.
Chelsea finalized the decision to recall Chalobah on Tuesday, ahead of Palace’s Premier League clash with Leicester City and before the deadline to activate the clause later this month.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner expressed disappointment at the move, particularly as Chalobah had to withdraw from their FA Cup victory over Stockport County on Sunday at short notice. Glasner initially cited the absence as a “contractual issue” but later elaborated:
“He wants to stay here, but it’s a decision Chelsea can take.”

During his four-and-a-half-month loan at Selhurst Park, Chalobah became a key figure in the Palace defense, making 14 appearances as a regular starter. His performances underlined his potential, but Chelsea’s injury concerns necessitated his early return.
The recall has sparked controversy, given Chalobah’s importance to Palace and his previously uncertain future at Chelsea. The central defender had been deemed surplus to requirements at the club and was part of a group informally dubbed “the bomb squad,” which included players like Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell who were training separately from the first team.
Chelsea had reportedly set a £25 million asking price for Chalobah during the last three transfer windows but received no suitable offers.
With Chalobah now back in the fold, Chelsea will hope his return can provide much-needed depth and stability to their injury-hit backline as they navigate a challenging period in the Premier League.
