Shubman Gill has confirmed his availability for Punjab’s sixth-round Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka, scheduled to begin on January 23 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Although Punjab hasn’t announced their squad yet, Gill’s return lets him work closely with Wasim Jaffer, Ranji Trophy’s all-time leading run-scorer and Punjab’s coach.

This opportunity comes amidst scrutiny of Gill’s performance outside Asia, where he has averaged just 17.64 in 18 innings since June 2021. His inclusion could be crucial, especially with India preparing for a five-Test series in England this summer. Punjab will also miss senior players Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh, both selected for India’s T20I series against England starting January 22 in Kolkata.
Gill last played in the Ranji Trophy for Punjab in 2022, featuring against Madhya Pradesh in the quarter-finals. His return aligns with the Indian team management’s directive for national players to participate in domestic cricket when free from international duties. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar have emphasized the importance of such contributions.
Gill struggled during India’s recent Test series in Australia, scoring a highest of 31 in five innings and averaging 18.60. After returning from a finger injury, he missed the Boxing Day Test as KL Rahul took the No. 3 spot, with Rohit Sharma opening. The team clarified that Gill wasn’t dropped but missed out due to team combinations.
Punjab currently sits fifth in Group A with one win in five games, needing a strong push to keep their playoff hopes alive.
