The linesman at the centre of the Andy Robertson controversy is set to return to officiating in a Liverpool match for the first time in nearly two years. The FA cleared Constantine Hatzidakis of any wrongdoing after his involvement in an alleged elbowing incident with Robertson during a 2-2 draw between Liverpool and Arsenal in April 2023, and he is now back on the pitch.
The FA suspended Hatzidakis while it conducted an investigation into the incident, which occurred during halftime. However, after a thorough review of the evidence, including multiple video angles and statements, the FA concluded there would be no further action against the official. Hatzidakis subsequently issued a private apology to Robertson, clarifying that the contact was unintentional.
A statement from Hatzidakis at the time read: “I have discussed the matter directly with Andy Robertson during an open and positive conversation. It was not my intention to make any contact with Andy as I pulled my arm away from him, and for that, I have apologised.”

Following his return to officiating, Hatzidakis will be part of the officiating team for Liverpool’s Carabao Cup match against Tottenham, alongside referee Stuart Attwell, assistant referee James Mainwaring, and fourth official Tim Robinson.
The incident between Robertson and Hatzidakis sparked significant debate, with former Manchester United player Roy Keane notably criticizing Robertson. Keane said at the time, “Robertson should be more worried about his defending… He’s a big baby. Just get on with the game.”
Robertson, 30, has continued to play a key role for Liverpool, making 24 appearances so far this season. Ahead of the Carabao Cup clash with Tottenham, Liverpool will face Manchester United in a high-stakes encounter at Anfield this weekend.
