Steve Smith Surpasses Matthew Hayden in Elite Run-Scoring List During Boxing Day Test at MCG

The first day of the fourth Test in Melbourne has been full of drama, with Australia gaining the upper hand early. After Sam Konstas’ aggressive knock put India on the back foot, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne took charge, dominating the Indian bowlers. Smith, who has faced criticism regarding his role and batting position in Tests, made history by surpassing Australian legend Matthew Hayden in terms of runs scored at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Smith’s remarkable performance against India pushed his MCG tally to 1126 runs, surpassing Hayden’s 1103 runs. He now sits just behind cricketing giants like Sir Don Bradman, who holds the record with 1671 runs at the venue. Smith’s latest achievement places him in the elite company of players who have made significant contributions on this iconic pitch. If Smith scores a century in this innings, he will surpass English legend Jack Hobbs, who scored 1178 runs at the MCG.

Australia’s Strong Start Shaken

Australia started the day confidently, reaching 176/2 in 53 overs at tea. Labuschagne and Smith built a steady partnership, frustrating the Indian bowlers after Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja. Labuschagne fought hard for his 72 off 145 balls before Washington Sundar dismissed him.

However, Australia’s momentum was interrupted in the third session. Smith, who was nearing a half-century, faced pressure as India struck back with key wickets. Bumrah dismissed both Travis Head for a duck and Mitchell Marsh for just four runs, leaving Australia slightly shaky at 240/4 in 68 overs. Despite the setbacks, Smith’s persistence keeps Australia in a commanding position.
