Honda has been cautioned by former MotoGP rider Pol Espargaro that returning to the top of the sport will require more than just financial investment. As the manufacturer continues to struggle with its performance, the Espargaro brothers are set to play a crucial role in the team’s revival.
In 2025, Aleix Espargaro will retire from racing and join Honda as a test rider, bringing a wealth of experience to the team. Many see his move as a significant step for Honda, who have struggled for several years, with the situation worsening after Marc Marquez’s departure. Pol, who was Marquez’s teammate for two seasons at Honda, believes that the key to Honda’s recovery lies in a more holistic approach, not just resources or funding.
“They are working, I know they are working,” Pol Espargaro said. “But it’s not just about working, resources, or how much money you have to deliver the result. It’s not about that! It’s everything together—how do you work? How is the organisation? How is the testing?”
Testing, according to Pol, has become a critical part of MotoGP, given the rapid pace of the sport. With race weekends leaving little time for testing, having a robust test team is essential for any manufacturer looking to compete at the highest level.
Pol continued, “The level is high, and the technology advances so much.” “I’ve seen how important a strong test team is for the progression of manufacturers.”

Aleix Espargaro’s decision to shift to a testing role marks the end of a distinguished racing career, including years at Aprilia. His brother noted that Aleix has long been contemplating a change in lifestyle, desiring to spend more time with family and explore other interests, such as cycling.
“Aleix reached a point where he had a lot of things in his head,” Pol said. “He wants to do different things in life, which is understandable after so many years in the paddock.”
Despite stepping back from active racing, Aleix’s commitment to helping Honda return to its former glory is clear. “To go to Honda, and to make them win again or be at the top again, is an amazing target, an amazing goal, a great adventure,” Pol added.
As Honda looks to regain its competitive edge, the addition of Aleix Espargaro as a test rider could be the key to propelling them back to the front of the MotoGP grid.
