Barcelona forward Ansu Fati faces a pivotal moment in his career as reports suggest he has been handed a final opportunity to secure his future at the Nou Camp. The 22-year-old, once heralded as one of Europe’s brightest talents, has struggled with injuries and inconsistency, leaving his position at the club in jeopardy.
Fati, who burst onto the scene as Barcelona’s youngest-ever goalscorer at the age of 16, was the subject of significant transfer interest early in his career. Manchester United reportedly tabled an £83.5 million bid for the winger in 2020, which Barcelona rejected, later securing Fati on a long-term contract with an astronomical £363 million release clause. However, his development has since stalled.
Loaned to Brighton for the 2023-24 season, Fati managed just four goals in 27 appearances, and injuries have kept him sidelined for much of this campaign. Despite his struggles, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is reportedly giving Fati the remainder of the season to prove his worth and reclaim a spot in the first team.
Spanish outlet Sport reports that if Fati fails to impress, the club will likely place him on the transfer list next summer. His current contract runs until 2027, but his place in the squad appears uncertain, with Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, and academy graduate Fermin Lopez ahead of him in the pecking order.

Fati’s fortunes could shift, however, as Barcelona seeks solutions to their recent dip in form, having suffered back-to-back defeats and a draw in their last three matches. Flick may turn to the young forward for a spark in the second half of the season.
Reflecting on Fati’s potential during pre-season, Flick had expressed optimism about the player’s abilities, stating:
“Ansu, in the first days, was unbelievable. He stayed very fit and demonstrated it on the pitch and in training. It’s unfortunate he’s not been available, but we’ll support him to come back stronger.”
Fati’s early promise saw him earn a senior Spain cap at just 17, and he recorded eight goals in his breakout season with Barcelona. However, recurring injuries limited him to just 25 appearances across the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. While he played 51 times in 2022-23, he failed to secure a permanent starting role, prompting his loan move to Brighton.
Now, with Barcelona looking for a resurgence in form and Fati’s career at a crossroads, the next few months will determine whether he can reclaim his place as a key figure for the Catalan giants or if his future lies elsewhere.
