Enzo Maresca Relieves Scoring Pressure on Cole Palmer as Chelsea’s Attack Flourishes

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed his satisfaction with the team’s offensive improvements. Suggesting that the club is no longer overly reliant on Cole Palmer for goals. The nickname “Cole Palmer FC” was coined by former manager Mauricio Pochettino last season. But Maresca believes the team’s evolution has rendered this label outdated.

Speaking after Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Southampton, Maresca highlighted that the team’s success in front of goal, including Palmer’s ninth goal of the season, reflects a broader, more balanced attack. With Chelsea now the highest-scoring team in the Premier League, Maresca emphasized that the squad’s attacking options have increased, easing the pressure on Palmer.

“We cannot rely on Cole for every game because it is not correct. He has to enjoy football,” Maresca stated. “If we prepare the season thinking Cole is the only solution, we are wrong. We work every day to allow him to be in situations where he can be his best.”

The Chelsea manager also explained his tactical flexibility with Palmer, moving him between the left and right wings to create the most advantageous attacking scenarios. Maresca praised the contributions of several other players, including Christopher Nkunku, Jadon Sancho, Noni Madueke, Mykhailo Mudryk, João Félix, and Nicolas Jackson, for lifting the burden on Palmer and strengthening the overall team performance.

The team’s attacking depth has been instrumental in Chelsea’s success, with Maresca stating, “The attacking players are doing well.” The former Leicester manager also pointed to the impressive displays of Moisés Caicedo in midfield, likening him to top-tier Premier League midfielders such as Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Manchester City’s Rodri. “Moisés is for sure at that level,” Maresca said. “No doubt.”

Despite Chelsea’s positive form, Maresca was quick to downplay any talk of a title challenge. “We are not thinking about May or June. It is too early,” he remarked, maintaining a focus on their next match against Tottenham. “We need to do many other things right, not just scoring goals. We need to avoid conceding goals, and we are doing quite well defensively.”

As Chelsea, currently second in the Premier League, continue to build momentum under Maresca. The manager’s emphasis on a collective effort rather than reliance on individual players has proven to be a successful approach.
