Lando Norris led McLaren’s charge on Friday in the build-up to the F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, topping both Free Practice 1 and Free Practice 2. The British driver’s performance puts McLaren in strong contention for the 2024 constructors’ title, entering the final race of the season with a 21-point advantage over Ferrari.
Charles Leclerc, who topped FP1, faces setback with 10-place grid penalty after his Ferrari required battery change beyond his allocation. Despite the penalty, he finished in sixth during FP2. Carlos Sainz, racing in his final weekend for Ferrari, was fourth, narrowly behind Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg, who finished in third. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top five.
Red Bull had a challenging Friday, with Sergio Perez finishing 14th and world champion Max Verstappen struggling with the balance of the RB20, ending FP2 in 17th after sitting out FP1. Alpine’s Jack Doohan, making his F1 debut by replacing Esteban Ocon, was 19th in FP2.
