Ruud van Nistelrooy, the newly appointed Leicester City manager, has expressed his disappointment at leaving Manchester United after a short spell as interim manager following Erik ten Hag’s departure. In a candid interview on Monday, Van Nistelrooy revealed that he had hoped to continue his role at United but understood the decision made by incoming manager Ruben Amorim to bring in his own staff.
“I was disappointed, yeah, very much so, and it hurt that I had to leave,” Van Nistelrooy admitted. “The only job I would take as an assistant was at United because of the bond I have with the club and its fans. But in the end, I got my head around it because I also understand the new manager’s decision.”
During his brief stint in charge of United, Van Nistelrooy oversaw three wins and one draw, earning praise for his leadership during a difficult transitional period for the club. Before his interim appointment, he had worked as an assistant under Ten Hag.
Van Nistelrooy, who enjoyed a stellar playing career with United, scoring 150 goals during his five-year tenure, stated that his time at the club was special. However, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to speak with Ruben Amorim, which helped him move on. “I spoke to Ruben Amorim about it, and the conversation was man to man, manager to manager. It helped a lot to move on and get into talks about new possibilities, which lifted my spirits.”
Now managing Leicester City, who currently sit 16th in the Premier League, Van Nistelrooy focuses on leading the club to safety. Despite the challenges, he believes his experience with clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester United, combined with his early years in Dutch football with FC Den Bosch, has prepared him to fight for survival.
“People see Real Madrid, Manchester United, but my first three seasons as a professional were in Dutch football with FC Den Bosch, so I know what it’s like to fight,” Van Nistelrooy added.
Leicester will host West Ham United on Tuesday as they look to climb out of the relegation zone.
