Gautam Gambhir, India’s head coach, will rejoin the team in Australia on Tuesday after returning home for personal reasons. He left India after the first Test in Perth on November 25 and missed the subsequent two-day tour match against the Australian Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra, which rain reduced to a limited-overs contest. Gambhir’s absence came during the Indian team’s preparations for the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, set to begin on December 6 in Adelaide.

During Gambhir’s absence, support staff members Abhishek Nayar, Ryan ten Doeschate, and Morne Morkel managed the team. Under their guidance, India won the Canberra fixture by six wickets, with standout performances from Harshit Rana (4 for 44) and Shubman Gill (50 in 62 balls).
As Gambhir returns, he will be involved in discussions about India’s playing XI for the second Test. Rohit Sharma, India’s full-time Test captain, rejoined the squad after missing the first Test to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah had led the team to a dominant 295-run victory in Perth.
Gill, who missed the first Test due to a thumb injury, will also be in contention for a place in the XI. The opening combination remains uncertain, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul putting together a strong partnership in Perth’s second innings. It’s likely that Jaiswal and Rahul will continue to open, with Gill returning at No. 3, Rohit potentially moving to the middle order, and Rishabh Pant also set to feature in the middle order.
