Max Verstappen has expressed his anger and frustration toward George Russell after the Mercedes driver’s comments during a steward’s meeting led to Verstappen receiving a grid penalty. The penalty, issued for allegedly driving unnecessarily slowly in qualifying, resulted in the Red Bull driver losing his pole position and relegating him to second place on the grid.
The incident occurred during the final moments of qualifying, as both drivers prepared for their flying laps. Russell, who swerved to avoid Verstappen, accused him of “dangerous” driving over the team radio. As a result, the stewards gave Verstappen a one-place grid penalty, allowing Russell to secure pole position for the race.
Verstappen passed Russell at the start of the race, won, and expressed deep displeasure with the situation. Reflecting on the stewards’ meeting, Verstappen stated, “I was quite surprised when sitting there in the stewards’ room, what was going on. Honestly, it was very disappointing, because I think we all respect each other here, but I’ve never seen someone trying to screw someone over that hard. For me, I lost all respect.”
The Dutch driver couldn’t believe he was penalized for the incident, especially since he believed he was simply trying to ensure that all drivers had a fair opportunity to set a lap time. Verstappen explained, “I think that’s the first time someone has received a penalty during a slow lap.” I was just trying to be nice, and maybe I shouldn’t have done that.”
Verstappen clarified his actions, saying he didn’t want to impede any other drivers’ chances of setting a competitive lap time. “I didn’t want to cause a scene and mess up anyone’s lap in the last corner. It was clear that around me, other drivers had colder tires and needed to push anyway, so I didn’t want to ruin the session for anyone,” Verstappen said.
Despite his frustration, Verstappen emphasized that he would move past the issue, stating, “You’re not happy with it, but at one point you just have to turn the page.” However, he admitted that the situation was particularly upsetting given that the penalty came after he made efforts to be considerate to his fellow drivers.
This isn’t the first time Verstappen and Russell have engaged in a tense exchange. Last year, the two had a heated clash during the sprint race in Baku, which saw Verstappen calling Russell a “dickhead” after a controversial incident.
As the rivalry between the two drivers continues to intensify, Verstappen’s harsh words reflect the growing tension, especially after the penalty controversy.
