Enzo Maresca Challenges Jadon Sancho to Be “Mentally and Physically” Ready for Chelsea Premier League XI

Jadon Sancho’s struggle to secure a regular starting spot at Chelsea has been a topic of concern, but Blues manager Enzo Maresca has urged the winger to improve his fitness—both mentally and physically—to earn a place in his Premier League lineup.

Sancho, who made a summer loan move from Manchester United to Chelsea, has had limited opportunities, with his last Premier League start coming on October 20. However, he got another chance on Thursday night in the Europa Conference League against Heidenheim, where he assisted in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory.

Despite not featuring prominently in recent-matches, Maresca has reiterated that Sancho remains an integral part of his plans for season. He emphasized that the 23-year-old must be at his best to make a significant impact in Chelsea’s attacking play, especially against teams that deploy a low defensive block.

“Jadon is very important for us. He has to be fit, both mentally and physically, and he will help us a lot,” Maresca explained. “Unfortunately, we haven’t used him in the last few games, but he’s shown tonight how crucial he can be. We need that quality in the final third.”

The key issue for Sancho has been fierce competition for places in Chelsea’s attack, following an influx of new signings. With players like Pedro Neto and Noni Madueke frequently preferred in wide positions, Erik ten Hag has relegated Sancho to a bench role in recent weeks. So far, he has made just seven appearances this season, nearly ten fewer than some of his teammates.

Maesca acknowledged intense competition for places and need for a strong squad effort, especially with the busy fixture list ahead. Chelsea are still competing in multiple competitions, and with the festive period approaching, rotation will be essential.

“I think all the squad players have done fantastically well,” said Maresca. “Jadon did a very good job. Axel [Disasi], Benoit [Badiashile], Cesare [Casadei]—all of them are ready, and that’s important. We have nine or ten games in December, so they will all get more chances. They need to be ready.”

Chelsea’s fixture schedule is about to intensify, starting with a Premier League clash against Aston Villa on Sunday. Following that, the Blues will face Southampton and Tottenham before returning to their European campaign. Maresca will continue to rely on his squad’s depth to navigate the packed schedule.
