Prithvi Shaw, once hailed as India’s cricketing prodigy, faced disappointment at the IPL 2025 mega auction, going unsold despite lowering his base price to INR 75 lakh. The 25-year-old Mumbai opening batter, who gained fame by leading India to victory in the 2018 U19 World Cup, has struggled to maintain his career momentum due to injuries and controversies.

While his contemporaries like Shubman Gill, Arshdeep Singh, and Abhishek Sharma have secured their places in the national squad, Shaw’s career has seen a series of setbacks, with his recent exclusion from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad adding to his woes. His snub at the IPL auction left him without a team for the 2025 season, further compounding his frustration.
Amid the IPL disappointment, Shaw faced intense trolling, especially after a viral video of him dancing on his birthday. In a video response to the online criticism, Shaw expressed his pain, stating that while trolling can be fun, it crosses a line when it becomes disrespectful. He questioned if celebrating his birthday was a crime for an athlete, defending his actions against the backlash.
Despite the IPL setback, Shaw remains determined to make a comeback. He is included in Mumbai’s squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he aims to prove himself and silence his critics. His exclusion from the Ranji Trophy squad was reportedly due to fitness concerns, with rumors suggesting his body fat exceeded 35%. Shaw, however, denied these claims, stating he simply needed a break and is hopeful of making a return to the national team, provided he meets fitness requirements in the future.
