Joel Embiid to Miss Two Games for 76ers Amid Knee Swelling and Injury Management

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid has been ruled out for both Friday’s matchup against the Brooklyn Nets and Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers due to knee swelling, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Initially, Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports reported that Embiid would sit out Friday’s game as part of ongoing management for his left knee injury. Charania later confirmed that the swelling in his knee was the primary concern, leading to the decision to rest the star player.

Embiid, the reigning NBA MVP, had already missed the first six games of the season for maintenance of his surgically repaired left knee. He was also sidelined for three additional games after receiving a suspension for an altercation with a reporter. The 76ers had planned a proactive approach to his workload, emphasizing injury management to ensure Embiid’s health throughout the season, with a specific focus on keeping him fresh for the playoffs.

While the strategy was designed to protect Embiid and maximize his availability for a postseason run, the early-season absences have highlighted the potential risks. By the time he made his season debut on November 12, the 76ers had dropped seven of their first nine games. Embiid’s return was not enough to reverse the team’s fortunes, as the Sixers fell 111-99 to the New York Knicks in his first game back, and suffered another loss the following night, 114-106, to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a game where he didn’t play in a back-to-back.

The 76ers’ hopes of easing the pressure on Embiid were further boosted by the signing of Paul George, who also entered the season with a load management plan. However, George missed the start of the season as well, and like Embiid, has not been able to provide the immediate help the team hoped for.

Ultimately, the success of the Sixers will be judged by their playoff performance. For now, despite high expectations entering the season, the excitement around the team has been tempered as they continue to navigate the challenges of managing their stars’ health.
