Temba Bavuma, South Africa’s Test captain, has recovered from an elbow injury in time for the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka at home. Bavuma will lead a 14-man squad that includes Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee, both of whom returned to international cricket during the T20I series against India. This will be their first Test appearances since last summer.

Bavuma’s return is crucial for a South African team looking to secure a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. South Africa must win all four home Tests—two against Sri Lanka and two against Pakistan—to guarantee their place in the WTC final. Three wins could also be enough, depending on other results. Bavuma’s leadership is key as the team looks to capitalize on recent successes, including three maiden centurions in Bangladesh.
Bavuma missed several games due to the injury he sustained in October against Ireland, which had sidelined him from competitive cricket. Although Bavuma has not played red-ball cricket since August, he underwent extensive testing, including batting against quick bowlers, and passed the assessments to be cleared for play. Head coach Shukri Conrad expressed confidence in Bavuma’s readiness, noting that the captain is excited to return to the Test side.
South Africa’s squad also features experienced fast bowlers like Kagiso Rabada and Dane Paterson, with Jansen and Coetzee added to strengthen the attack. Bavuma returns to captain South Africa, with spinners Maharaj and Muthusamy included, while Rickelton makes way for him. South Africa faces a confident Sri Lankan side, and the upcoming series is crucial for both teams’ WTC aspirations. The first Test starts on November 27 in Durban.
