Indian fans are anxious as news circulates that captain Rohit Sharma may not join the squad’s initial departure to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rohit is soon expecting the birth of his second child, which could lead to his absence in the first Test, set to begin on November 22 in Perth.

However, a report from the Times of India suggests Rohit Sharma’s availability for the opener is still uncertain, as he might head to Australia closer to the Test date. “Yes, Rohit is not traveling with the team, but don’t rule him out of the first Test just yet. He may end up flying later during the third week,” an insider shared with TOI.

India’s squad is departing in two groups on Sunday and Monday, and speculation continues around whether Rohit will arrive in time. If he misses the opening match, Jasprit Bumrah, India’s star pacer, is likely to step in as captain. Known for his fierce bowling, Bumrah would face new leadership challenges, and Indian fans are eager to see how he rises to the occasion if needed.

The stakes are high for India in this Border-Gavaskar series. They need to win at least four out of the five matches to secure a direct place in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s in June 2025. The team recently slipped to second on the WTC points table after a 0-3 home series defeat to New Zealand, adding to the pressure. Any outcome below a four-match victory would mean India relying on other teams’ results to qualify for the WTC final.

Indian supporters are hopeful that Rohit’s experience and top-order strength will be available, but the situation remains uncertain for now.
