Barcelona midfielder Pedri recently opened up about the contrasting disciplinary methods of coaches Xavi Hernandez and Hansi Flick, shedding light on how each manager handles lateness within the first-team squad.
Speaking on the television show Martínez y Hermanos, Pedri explained that Flick takes a much stricter stance than Xavi. “There are coaches who penalize by the minute—five minutes late could mean 5,000 euros,” he noted. Flick, however, doesn’t just fine players; he enforces a zero-tolerance policy, making players sit out games if they’re late. “If you arrive late, you don’t play,” Pedri revealed, underscoring the German coach’s emphasis on punctuality.
In contrast, Xavi’s approach is more lenient but still impactful. Pedri explained that Xavi would fine players 5,000 euros for lateness, with the amount doubling for each subsequent minute. “If you arrive late multiple times, the fines keep doubling—you’re in real trouble if it happens four or five times,” he added.
Flick’s rigid approach has already made waves this season. Defender Jules Koundé was notably dropped from the starting lineup against Alaves after reportedly arriving late to a team meeting, underscoring Flick’s commitment to discipline and punctuality since his arrival at Barcelona.
Pedri’s insights offer a rare glimpse into the different management styles of the two coaches, highlighting Flick’s no-nonsense attitude and Xavi’s firm yet flexible approach to discipline.
