French Minister Warns of Match Suspensions Over Homophobic Chants in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2

In response to recent incidents of homophobic chants in stadiums, French Sports Minister Gil Averous has stated that Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 matches could be interrupted or even suspended entirely should further episodes occur. The announcement highlights a stricter stance on fan behavior in French football.

The move follows controversial scenes during Paris Saint-Germain’s recent 4-2 victory over Strasbourg, where homophobic chants were heard from the stands, sparking public outcry and condemnation from the French Professional Football League (LFP). Minister Averous has called upon the French Football Federation (FFF) to rigorously enforce FIFA’s guidelines, which allow for match suspension, interruption, and even abandonment in cases of discriminatory behavior. “We have asked the FFF to strictly apply the FIFA protocol, and we will start doing this from Sunday onward,” Averous emphasized in an interview with BFM TV.

Additionally, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau confirmed that two individuals responsible for initiating the homophobic chants during the PSG game have been identified, signaling an intensified effort to address inappropriate fan conduct.

With the new policy in place, French football authorities aim to promote an inclusive environment in stadiums, warning that future infractions could disrupt games to ensure a safer, more respectful atmosphere for all fans.
