Reports suggest that Lucknow SuperGiants are preparing to part ways with experienced batter KL Rahul ahead of the upcoming mega auction. IPL franchises have until October 31 to finalize their lists of retained players, and the SuperGiants have decided to release Rahul into the auction pool, according to The Times of India.

While KL Rahul has been consistent as a top-order batter, concerns over his scoring rate have troubled the LSG management. His strike rate has significantly declined since the 2018 season, drawing criticism for his batting approach in the IPL. The management, including mentor Zaheer Khan and coach Justin Langer, has analyzed his performance and found that the team often struggles in matches where Rahul bats for extended periods and scores runs. This indicates that his strike rate does not align with the current fast-paced nature of the game, particularly with the Impact Player rule resulting in higher scores. An IPL source noted, “You can’t afford to have someone taking so much time at the top of the order.”
In addition to releasing KL Rahul, the franchise plans to retain key players, including explosive batter Nicholas Pooran, spinner Ravi Bishnoi, and fast bowler Mayank Yadav, ahead of the auction. They are also expected to keep Ayush Badoni and Mohsin Khan as uncapped players. This strategic shift reflects the SuperGiants’ focus on enhancing their squad’s dynamics and performance as they prepare for IPL 2025.
