India faced a historic defeat in their opening Test against New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, marking the visitors’ first Test victory on Indian soil since 1988. Despite a spirited fightback in their second innings, India fell short as New Zealand successfully chased down a modest target of 107 runs, winning by eight wickets. This victory marked New Zealand’s third Test win in India, highlighting nearly seven decades of challenging performances in the subcontinent.

A major talking point was India’s poor batting start. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, India was bowled out for just 46 runs. New Zealand seized the opportunity, amassing a commanding total of 402. In response, India improved significantly in their second innings, scoring 462 runs, but it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat.
Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant stood out with a near-century in India’s second innings, coming close to a well-deserved hundred before being dismissed. Following the loss, Pant shared a heartfelt message on social media, offering motivation to his followers. He tweeted: “This game will test your limits, knock you down, lift you up, and throw you back again. But those who love it rise stronger every time. Thanks to the amazing Bengaluru crowd for the love, support, and cheers. We will be back stronger.”
With two more Tests in the series, India aims to regroup and learn from this defeat while New Zealand seeks to build on their historic win.
