In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Spain’s Jorge Martin led the Australian MotoGP sprint race from start to finish on Saturday, solidifying his championship lead over rival Francesco Bagnaia. The race took place under challenging windy conditions at Phillip Island, where Martin showcased his prowess, crossing the finish line ahead of the competition.
Defending world champion Bagnaia, hailing from Italy, finished the race in fourth place, while Marc Marquez claimed the second spot on the podium. Enea Bastianini, another Italian rider, rounded out the top three in third position. Fabio di Giannantonio and Franco Morbidelli followed closely behind, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.
The race, however, was marred by a significant crash involving Maverick Vinales and Marco Bezzecchi. Late in the race, Vinales appeared to catch Bezzecchi’s slipstream, resulting in contact that sent both riders and their bikes crashing into the gravel. Fortunately, both appeared to escape serious injury, emerging battered but relatively unharmed.
Just two weeks ago, Bagnaia had narrowed the gap with Martin to just 10 points by winning both the sprint and main event in Japan. However, Martin’s remarkable performance in Australia allowed him to extend his lead to 16 points as the championship heads into its final stretch, with only three race weekends remaining after Australia.

Marquez’s strong finish moved him into a tie for third place in the standings, 84 points behind Martin, sharing the position with Bastianini. Martin’s impeccable start set the tone for the race, contrasting with Marquez’s early misstep that caused him to drop from second to eighth at the first corner. Meanwhile, Bagnaia gained ground, moving up to fourth early on.
As the race progressed, Martin opened a commanding 2.6-second lead by the halfway mark, ultimately crossing the line 1.520 seconds ahead of Marquez. This event marked the first-ever 13-lap sprint race at Phillip Island, following the cancellation of last year’s planned race due to inclement weather.
With Martin’s victory, the anticipation builds for the main grand prix on Sunday as he looks to further solidify his position in the championship standings.
