The Football Association (FA) is reportedly exploring the possibility of appointing Pep Guardiola as the next manager of the England national football team. As Guardiola’s current contract with Manchester City is set to expire next summer, informal discussions have already taken place between the FA and the City manager, although a response from Guardiola is still awaited, according to The Times.
Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has publicly urged the FA to pursue Guardiola for the role. Following England’s 3-1 victory over Finland on Sunday, Keane stated on ITV, “Go for the best. Pep’s contract ends in the summer.”
Despite the speculation surrounding his future, Guardiola has expressed uncertainty regarding his next steps. In an interview with the Italian television program Che tempo Che Fa, he remarked, “Leaving City? That’s not accurate. I haven’t made up my mind yet.” He further emphasized, “It’s also incorrect to assume I’ll be the next England manager. If I had made a decision, I would announce it… Anything is possible.”
Since joining Manchester City in 2016, Guardiola has enjoyed remarkable success. Leading the club to six Premier League titles—including four consecutive championships—and securing the UEFA Champions League trophy. His impressive track record makes him a compelling candidate for the England position, should he choose to pursue a new challenge. However, former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel is currently viewed as the favorite among bookmakers.
In the meantime, Lee Carsley, the manager of the England Under-21s, will guide the senior team through the upcoming Nations League group stage matches next month. This follows Gareth Southgate’s departure after Euro 2024. Carsley has had a successful start in his interim role, securing three wins and one loss.
The FA has opted not to comment on its search for a new manager, while Manchester City has also remained silent on the ongoing speculation. As discussions continue, the football community awaits further developments on the future of both Guardiola and the England national team.
