Manchester City to Appoint Sporting’s Hugo Viana as New Sporting Director

Manchester City is set to appoint Hugo Viana as their new sporting director, succeeding Txiki Begiristain, who will depart the club after 12 years in the role. The Premier League champions have reached an agreement with Viana’s current club, Sporting CP, for his transfer, with the 41-year-old former Portugal and Newcastle midfielder expected to join City early next year.

In a strategic move, Manchester City plans for Viana to undergo a transition period alongside Begiristain before officially taking over at the end of the current season. The club’s management recognized the need for a thorough search for Begiristain’s replacement, and Viana emerged as a frontrunner due to his impressive track record at Sporting.

During his six-year tenure at Sporting, Viana has been instrumental in the club’s success, helping them secure two Primeira Liga titles. He has garnered a reputation for identifying and acquiring young talent from across the globe, overseeing significant transfers, including those of Manuel Ugarte, Matheus Nunes, and Nuno Mendes, which have brought in substantial financial returns for the club.

Viana also played a key role in the appointment of head coach Rúben Amorim, who has transformed Sporting’s fortunes since his arrival from Braga. Under Amorim’s guidance, Sporting has claimed two league titles and two Portuguese Cups, while also making a mark in European competitions with an attractive style of play.

Although Viana’s playing career included stints at Sporting and Valencia, his time at Newcastle was less memorable. After retiring, he began his management career as the sporting director at Belenenses before returning to Sporting in the same capacity.

As City prepares for the future, the club is also looking to resolve the situation regarding Pep Guardiola, whose contract expires in the summer. Notably, Manchester City will face Sporting in the Champions League group stage in November, providing Viana a chance to compete against his future employers.
