The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has announced its 22-member squad for the initial rounds of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season, with young wicketkeeper-batter Aryan Juyal appointed as captain. The team is set to begin the season against Bengal on October 11 at the Ekana International Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

In a surprising decision, the selection committee has excluded veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar from the squad. The experienced bowler returned to first-class cricket in January 2024 after a six-year break, but the selectors seem to be shifting their focus toward younger talent for the pace attack. This omission raises concerns about the future of Bhuvneshwar’s red-ball career, especially since national selectors have already moved on from him for international duties.
Bhuvneshwar has been a cornerstone of the Uttar Pradesh team, amassing 231 wickets in 72 first-class matches, with an impressive best spell of 8/41. However, his last Test appearance for India was in 2018, and he has faced stiff competition from a new generation of pace bowlers in the national setup. His last outings in T20Is and ODIs were in 2022, and he has since been absent from the international squad.
With the red-ball format seemingly closed off for him, Bhuvneshwar may need to focus on white-ball formats and explore opportunities in various T20 leagues. The future of his domestic career remains uncertain, as Uttar Pradesh’s selection committee shows a clear intent to invest in younger players for their Ranji Trophy campaign.
